Child shot while hugging father: Monroe County stepdad facing assault charges, cops say

A Monroe County man is facing assault charges after shooting his 10-year-old stepson during a dispute at a Chestnuthill Township home, state police said.

Aside from the three counts of aggravated assault, 34-year-old Darius Oshan James, of the 100 block of Caddo Terrace in Albrightsville, also is charged with felony child endangerment; two counts misdemeanor reckless endangerment; and misdemeanor simple assault.

DEP to Host Public Hearing for Proposed I-80 Reconstruction Project in Monroe County

Public requested hearing to offer input on the individual NPDES and water encroachment permit applications

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold a hearing to take testimony from the public on National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) Application No. PAD450214for the discharge of stormwater from construction activities related to the proposed I-80 reconstruction project to the following watercourses and Water Obstruction and Encroachment Joint Permit Application No. E4502125-001.

Candlelight vigil held for Charlie Kirk in Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Hundreds gathered in front of the Monroe County Courthouse for a candlelight vigil honoring Charlie Kirk's life. Kirk was killed a week ago at a college campus in Utah. 

"I didn't really know Charlie until after he was killed, and it's broke my heart, and I just felt that I needed to be here tonight,” said Michael Campion of East Stroudsburg.

New York man dies in Monroe County ATV crash

BLAKESLEE, Pa. — A 22-year-old New York man died Saturday morning in an ATV crash in Monroe County, officials said.

The crash that claimed Dmytro Prokopets' life was reported just before 2:40 a.m. along state Route 115 in Tunkhannock Twp., Pocono Mountain Regional Police said.

Prokopets, of Brooklyn, had been driving an ATV that was struck from behind by a 2018 Nissan Sentra driven by Tshilonda Sabwa, 57, of Albrightsville.

Stroudsburg Borough Council sets annual tax on skill game machines

Stroudsburg Borough Council has set its tax on skill game machines.

On Sept. 16, the borough council approved a resolution that will tax businesses with skill games at $750 per machine annually. Council member Joseph Shay voted against the resolution and council member Walter Lopez voted present.

Clearview Elementary opens doors for clean-out sale

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Clearview Elementary School on North Fifth Street in Stroudsburg has been closed for a decade. 

Over the years, Stroudsburg Area Superintendent Dr. Cosmas Curry says the classrooms and gym have become storage spaces for items from various schools. 

Clearview's doors will open on Tuesday and Wednesday for people to shop around. 

The school will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
