Former lunch monitor sues Stroudsburg district for defamation over mouth tape incident

A former lunch monitor at a Monroe County elementary school sued the principal, superintendent and school district for defamation stemming from an April incident involving tape on children’s mouths.

In her lawsuit filed on Aug. 14 in the Monroe County Court of Common Pleas, former Hamilton Elementary lunch monitor Dorothy Lanza said she was defamed in statements made by Principal Mark Getz and Stroudsburg Area School District Superintendent Cosmas Curry.

Because they’re on their way.  Right now, Tobyhanna Township is considering changes to their zoning ordinance to allow data centers, and a property owner in the headwaters of the Swiftwater Creek hopes to attract one. 

Monroe County conducting property reassessment using satellite technology

For a new round of property reassessment in Monroe County, a higher-tech option will help streamline the field assessment process.

According to Monroe County Commissioner Chairman John Christy, this year’s county reassessment will look different than the last reassessment in 2019. Christy said the county will use satellite technology to compare results of recent flyovers to those that were done last reassessment. If properties are different, the county will send out people to see what was constructed.

30-Year-Old Dies at Music Festival, Investigation Underway

A 30-year-old man has died after attending this year’s Elements music festival in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

A man identified only by his first name, Sagel, reportedly suffered cardiac arrest while in a vehicle exiting the Pocono International Raceway festival grounds on August 11. As of now, the official cause of death has not been released.

Countywide Reassessment - A Commitment to Ongoing Equity

After the 2019 reassessment, Monroe County officials agreed that conducting future reassessments every 5 to 7 years would help maintain fairness and accuracy. This approach aligns with practices in other jurisdictions—Lancaster County reassesses every 8 years and most states mandate regular reassessments. Monroe County’s upcoming Reassessment will not be effective until January 2028.

On July 1, 2025, Monroe County’s Common Level Ratio fell to 45.47%.

Monroe County Launches Countywide Property Reassessment Project

Monroe County, PA – Monroe County has officially partnered with Tyler Technologies to conduct a comprehensive, countywide property reassessment. This initiative follows the County’s previous reassessment implemented in 2020. The multi-year project includes data collection, verification, assessment of property values, and opportunities for property owners to appeal their new assessments. The reassessment is scheduled to be completed by 2028.
