United States Department of Homeland Security undergoes staff changes

Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was expelled by President Donald Trump on March 5, 2026. She was his first cabinet secretary to be fired, or ousted, during his second term. She will be taking over a new role as “Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.” This means she will lead Trump’s new security initiative in the Western Hemisphere. Trump’s administration has yet to release a definitive statement explaining Noem’s absence, but there is speculation as to why it happened. Reports explain Trump was frustrated with her words regarding a $220 million ad campaign of Noem on a horse in front of Mount Rushmore, completely funded by taxpayer dollars. The Judiciary Committee conducted a hearing on March 4, 2026, that included Noem’s final moments as DHS Secretary.

Olympic Figure Skating Star: Alysa Liu

“Winning isn’t all that, and neither is losing. It’s just something that happens. It’s the outcome. But what matters is the input and the journey. And I would say take a break. I take breaks even now, and I think that’s the way to do it.” Alysa Liu is a recent Olympic gold medalist for figure skating at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.  Born in Oakland, California, Liu began skating for fun at the young age of five and started competitive skating at 12.  In 2019, she would become the youngest U.S. women’s figure skating champion. That very same year at the Detroit National Championships, she became the first U.S woman to land three triple axels.

“Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” — Bell Hooks. In an unkind world, Bell Hooks picked up a pen and entered the writing scene in hopes of starting a wave of change. Born as Gloria Jean Watkins on September 25, 1952, Hooks was an influential American author and social advocate. Hooks unfortunately passed away in 2021 on December 15.  Before passing, she solidified a legacy of advocacy and writing to pass on to the rest of the world. “Bell Hooks” was a pseudonym used as an alias and was often lowercase to keep attention on the writings. She chose the name in honor of her great-grandmother, Blair Bell Hooks.  Bell Hooks was a writer, professor, and social activist who wrote to change the way many people think about feminism, race, education, and love. What is SHS listening to?

Intro – Have you ever been in a room full of people and a song starts playing, and suddenly, everyone knows the words? In that moment, it doesn’t matter where people come from or what languages they speak, everyone is connected. Music has the ability to bring people together and bridge together cultural differences in different ways than others. Music is a very important part of my life. Music is powerful and shows character. I can listen to music whenever I feel sad or happy. No matter what I’m feeling, music is always there to cheer me up. I can listen to music when I need a good cry or a stomach-hurting laugh. I use music to keep me energized and on task when I need to be focused. – Giana Cuesto
