STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Vigils for the late political activist Charlie Kirk have been popping up worldwide since his assassination last week, including a few in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
28/22 News Reporter Avery Nape was in Stroudsburg on Wednesday night for a service that brought out hundreds of people to celebrate and memorialize his life.
The voice of the late Charlie Kirk reached far beyond party lines both nationally and around the globe, and the impact his messages had is no different here in NEPA.
Hundreds filled Courthouse Square in Downtown Stroudsburg on Wednesday to remember the late Charlie Kirk.
People, young and old, gathered to keep both his memory and his message alive.
"He reached out to the young people, and the young people are going to be our leaders someday," Stroudsburg resident David Bryant told 28/22 News.

Schools call for cyber charter reform, education budget
EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — School officials and community advocates are turning up the pressure on state lawmakers in East Stroudsburg.
Groups from across the Poconos called for cyber charter reform and an end to Pennsylvania's three-month budget stalemate at Echo Lake Park on Wednesday.
Districts say they have missed out on almost two billion dollars in state payments while cyber schools sit on reserves and spend millions on ads and executive perks.
For the 2022-23 school year alone, Pocono-area districts paid more than 20 million dollars in cyber costs.

Scott Robinson didn't have an easy childhood. He lost his parents at a young age, and his siblings died from addiction. Scott himself fell into addiction and sought help when he was just 11 years old.
"I had a lot of trauma and was in fight or flight mode for many years," Scott said.
31 years later, Scott needed help again and recently went through in-person treatment. This time, he did it for his kids and grandkids.

Tiffany Destefano found the strength to leave what she calls a toxic home situation.
After securing stable housing for her kids, Tiffany found herself couch surfing at friends' houses, then living in a car.
"You gotta stay hopeful, you definitely do. Can't give up," Destefano told 28/22 News.

Stroud Mansion's 'Heritage Center' to open in 2026
STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Stroudsburg’s past is getting a fresh polish as a new heritage center in the Poconos is in its final stages.
The Stroud Mansion on Main and North Ninth Street is a time capsule to Stroudsburg’s roots.
Originally home of founder, Jacob Stroud, it’s a relic of the past still being used today, but now featuring some much-needed upgrades.
“The house was built in 1795; it was never intended to be a museum, a library, a community space, and offices in 2025,” says Amy Leiser, executive director, Monroe County Historical Association

TUNKHANNOCK TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police report that an ATV driver was killed after a crash and sent a passenger to the hospital for serious injuries.
On September 13, around 2:30 a.m., officers were called to a crash involving an ATV and a vehicle on Route 115 in Tunkhannock Township.
Police say the ATV driver, Dymtro Prokopets, 22, with a passenger, Andrii Zhyryk, 19, both of Brooklyn, New York, were on SR 115 when a vehicle hit them from behind.
Zhyryk was flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley with serious injuries, while Prokopets was pronounced dead on the scene.
Officers noted that "neither ATV rider was wearing any protective gear, and both were wearing dark clothing."
The crash is under investigation.

About five years ago, Ana Karen Flores-Alfaro moved to the area with her son after escaping domestic violence. She felt lonely and struggled to start over in a new place as a single mom.
"It's hard because I don't have family here, and I did come from a very close family, so it's not like I can call and say, 'Hey, can you help me?' Because everything's hard right now for everybody," Flores-Alfaro said.

District Attorney Mike Mancuso recently posted a response to claims that private security personnel perform police-style traffic stops in violation of Pennsylvania law."Enforcement of Driving Rules in a Private Gated Community: Recently a resident of A Pocono Country Place applied for dozens of Private Criminal Complaints. He wanted several security officers, their supervisors, and the property owner’s association charged with a number of crimes claiming that they are improperly exercising police powers by conducting traffic stops and using equipment like red and blue lights and radar. Cynthia Lang is grocery shopping. But she's not at the grocery store, and her bill is free. "It's a lot of help, you get a lot of food here," Lang said.
State-of-the-art facility is being built to fight food insecurity
Cynthia takes care of her husband, who has limited mobility, and money is tight. They rely on the Salvation Army in East Stroudsburg's food pantry to get by every week.
