CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Thousands of veterans take their lives each year, and organizers say the goal of that display is to give people a visual reminder of the startling statistics.
Suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss for many, but for veterans, 28/22 News spoke with, having those difficult discussions could very well mean the difference between life and death.
If you've driven down Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township, you may have noticed an array of American flags in front of American Legion Post 927.
572 flags line the lawn, each one representing a veteran who has died by suicide in just 26 days. It's a sobering figure, and members of the legion say that's the point.

Stroudsburg scored four goals in the game. Georgie English ’26, Emma Dreisbach, ’28, Gracelyn Barzev, ’28, and Peyton Witmer, ’28, all attempted one shot, but unfortunately, they were all blocked.

On September 11, they faced Emmaus, where they suffered a tough loss, 0-10.

Kissing bugs not so friendly
When you hear the term “kissing bugs,” you might picture benign or even appealing insects.
Zoey Charles, ’27, commented, “When I heard the term ‘kissing bug,’ I originally thought it was like a sickness you get from kissing other people.”
In reality, these bugs, scientifically known as Triatominae, carry the parasite that causes Chagas disease. This disease originated in Latin America back in 1909, discovered by a Brazilian physician, Carlos Chagas.
According to Uclahealth.org, they are only called “kissing bugs,” because they transfer the parasite by “kissing,” a better term for biting, a person’s face in their sleep.
When the bug bites human skin, it also defecates, which is how the parasite, called Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), gets deposited.

It was the unthinkable, and it happened in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Not only is it the reason Zeaman chose to major in early childhood and elementary education, it’s also what inspired her to begin a fundraiser that has raised nearly $40,000 towards cancer research since 2013.
That year, as Zeaman was beginning her own educational journey as a first grader at McDonald Elementary School in Warminster, Pa., she started Savannah’s Lemonade Stand as a tribute to her late kindergarten teacher, Kathryn Shelmire, who had died from cancer the year before.Bagging food to fight hunger in the Poconos

Creating Responsibility and Transparency for Data Center Development
Local governments are on the front lines of decision-making that directly impacts data center development. They determine zoning, land use, and ultimately where large facilities like data centers can be located. Because of this responsibility, it is critical that they have the tools and information necessary to make sound, informed decisions on behalf of their residents.

POLK TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new resource in the Poconos aims to ease food insecurity, while also honoring the service of local heroes.

It may only be September, but the holidays are on the minds of volunteers at Valor Clinic Foundation in Polk Township.
They’ve already begun planning for Thanksgiving, hoping to fill freezers like this one with turkeys to feed more than 630 veterans and their families.
“If you don’t think you could help, you’d be surprised. You helping somebody may make somebody else smile, and that’s what it’s about,” shared Richard Snider, food pantry volunteer at the Valor Clinic Foundation.
The nonprofit is centered around assisting veterans with food insecurity, shelter, and mental health resources.
