More Information on Hoopla’s Daily Borrowing Limit

The library’s daily borrowing limit on Hoopla is in place to help manage costs and ensure continued access to this service for all patrons—not just today, but throughout each month and the entire year. If you are seeing a message indicating that a title is unavailable due to the library’s borrow limit being reached, please be assured that there is nothing wrong with your account. This is a system-wide limit for EMPL, not a personal/individual one, and it resets automatically at midnight. Your personal borrowing limit of 6 items per month remains unchanged. The system wide, daily borrowing limit was set on September 1st, 2025.

What is the daily borrowing limit?

The library subscribes to Hoopla on a monthly budget. Hoopla divides that monthly amount into a daily allowance. Each time a title is borrowed—whether an eBook, audiobook, video, or other format—the cost of that item is deducted from the day’s total. Once the daily budget is spent, no additional titles can be borrowed until the limit resets at midnight.

This borrowing cap allows the library to continue offering Hoopla throughout the entire month, rather than exhausting the budget early.

Why am I seeing a message that the title is unavailable?

When the daily borrowing limit is reached, all users will temporarily be unable to borrow new materials through Hoopla for the remainder of the day. The message you see—“The collective daily borrow limit set by your library has been reached and will reset at midnight”—indicates that the Eastern Monroe Public Library cap has been met.

Your personal borrowing limit of 6 items per month remains unchanged.

When does this typically occur?

While the cap can be reached on any day, it most commonly occurs and happens early:

  • Early in the month, when monthly credits reset
  • Near the end of the month, as library users use up their remaining credits
  • During school breaks, holidays, or weather-related closures when usage spikes

What you can do:

  • Add the title to your Favorites in Hoopla to borrow it more easily later
  • Try borrowing the item again after midnight, when the system resets
  • Consider trying to borrow titles earlier in the day, before the limit is reached
