Shiqi Zhang, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at East Stroudsburg University, has been elected to serve on the national steering committee for the Primarily Undergraduate Institution (PUI) Section of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB). As a member of the PUI Section steering committee, Dr. Zhang will collaborate with faculty from PUIs nationwide to shape initiatives that support plant biology educators and researchers. During her three-year term, she will also serve as one of the co-chairs. In this role, she will help lead monthly career development workshops—both online and at ASPB’s annual conference, work to secure funding for section activities, advocate for travel and research support for PUI faculty, and promote the research achievements of undergraduate and graduate students in plant biology.

East Stroudsburg University’s Women’s Rugby club team will travel to Houston to play in the Division III national championships December 6-7, after winning the South Regional in Georgetown, Delaware. The Warriors earned the regional championship with a 48-12 win over SUNY-Cortland. They won their first game, 140-0, over Hofstra University. The team advanced to the regional by winning the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union championship over Loyola University, 103-0. In Houston, the Warriors will play Endicott College, champions of the East Region, in the national semifinals on Saturday, December 6. In the other semifinal, Siena College (Midwest Region) takes on Colorado School of Mines (West Region). The semifinal winners will compete for the national championship on Sunday.

Community tensions are rising as local officials appear to dismiss widespread support for reopening the BACK 9 dirt bike track. In a recent public meeting, Supervisor Robert Lovenheim made statements that clearly signal his opposition to the project. Meanwhile, Supervisor Michael Albert acknowledged the community’s need for outdoor recreation and a safe, structured environment for dirt bike riding.Despite overwhelming support from residents, opposition remains entrenched among just two supervisors and roughly a dozen residents out of a township population of nearly 7,000.
