The United States captured a huge win over Canada in hockey during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The game took place in Milan, Italy in the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, which was specifically designed and built for the game.
Team USA defeated Canada 2-1, which secured their first gold medal for men’s hockey since 1980. The game started out hot for the United States, with forward Matt Boldy making a shot very early on in the first period. This was all the scoring that would happen in the first period, though late in the second period, defenseman Cale Makar would tie the score 1-1.
The 3rd period would remain scoreless, despite Canada getting extremely close to scoring multiple times. So, with the score tied 1-1, the game was going into overtime. Though, only about 2 minutes into the extra period, forward Jack Hughes would score the game winning “golden goal” to win the game with a final score of 2-1, winning the U.S. their first gold medal after 46 years. “
We all wanted our country to win… and that’s the greatest part about it.

This play featured the young U.S. team defeating a very experienced USSR team.
“I hope this will inspire kids to put this jersey on someday, as it’s the best feeling in the world,” Detroit Red Wings Center Dylan Larkin said after the win. “What we just did, nothing will ever match this.”
Jack Hughes also had another memorable moment in this victory, after taking a stick to the face, Hughes chipped his front right tooth. Yet, he still returned into the game to score the winning goal.
Another noticeable performance came from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who saved a mindblowing 41 of 42 shots from Canada. “It was an all-time performance from a superstar at his position,” Florida Panthers Left Wing Matthew Tkachuk said. “It’s going to go down as one of the best performances of all time. It has to. All the great United States goaltending performances you want to talk about, that’s right up there. If we don’t have him, we don’t win.”
Even though Canada lost, Edmonton Oilers Center Connor McDavid won MVP, who had 2 goals and 11 assists in 2 games. To nobody’s surprise, Winnipeg Jets Goalie Connor Hellebuyck won best goalie.
“It’s a dream come true,” Hellebuyck said after the game.
“I love this group, we’ve had so much fun over here, we’ve grinded, we’ve battled, this is some of the best and most fun hockey I’ve ever played.” Overall, the U.S. put up a truly impressive performance in this year’s Winter Olympics, and is only looking to do even more in the near future.
