Every day we come into school and learn, but no one seems to know how deep the history goes. The school we’ve seen for years hasn’t always been here.

The first school in Stroudsburg was a simple log cabin built by the Stroud family. It opened up in the 1800s, with the first teacher being Mr. Curtis, and was located on Keevers Hill. It was then relocated to Green Street, which is now known as 8th Street.

The first Strourdsburg High School was built in 1882, on Sixth and Thomas Street, though it wasn’t a single structure. It was actually a series of buildings, the first of which had eight rooms; it was then expanded in 1893.

Due to the number of students a new school was being planned with land being purchased in the fall of 1926. As luck would have it, the school burnt down in February of 1927, with the Ramsey High School now occupying the site of the former high school.

The land that they bought is where the current high school now lies on West Main Street. The school held a grand opening in 1928. Which means the next graduating class was 1929.

In 2010, the High School underwent renovation and expansion. The revamp finished in 2014—the project aimed to provide more space for students and modernize the aging building.

Because of Stroudsburg High School’s deep history, we have many notable alumni, including the well-known NFL player Sebastian Joseph-Day and Byron Lichtenburg, a former NASA astronaut who became the first payload specialist to fly in space in 1983.

Stroudsburg High School has been here for many years and has seen a lot. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to learn and make connections that last a lifetime. So, when you walk in these halls, take a moment and think about what this school has lived through.
