“The Housemaid” review

The movie “The Housemaid” came out Dec. 19, 2025.

It is directed by Paul Feig and features stars such as Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar.

This movie is an exciting new thriller and drama that is filled with suspense, suspicion, and unexpected plot twists.

It has been called a “domestic thriller.” This movie portrays a “perfect family”: the wife Nina, her husband Andrew, and her daughter Cecilia. They are very wealthy and have a beautiful home, but behind closed doors, through manipulation and control, it becomes clear that this family is far from perfect.

The story follows a girl named Millie (Sweeney) who is trying to find a housekeeping job as a way to stay out of trouble. Despite trying to cover up her past and lying on her resume, she gets accepted as a live-in maid for the Winchester family.

She gets to live in a nice house, is paid a good salary, and best of all, has a private room in the attic of the house where no one can hear her.

This position seems like a perfect opportunity for Millie to have a fresh start, but the job won’t be as luxurious as it appears.

After living in this house for less than a day, it already becomes clear to Millie that there is something extremely wrong. Strange things started to happen. Millie notices locks in her bedroom door that she is not given a key to and there is one small window that does not open.

Nina’s daughter Cecilia (Seyfried) watches Millie quietly, and hints to her that she should leave the house immediately. Nina starts to behave erratically, while her seemingly charming husband calms her down and apologizes to Millie for her behavior.

Even the gardener acts strange, appearing in random moments. He stares at Milly through the windows as if he is trying to warn her of something. Clearly, everyone in the household knows more about the disturbing secrets than they are letting on. Nina’s husband Andrew (Sklenar) begins to show interest in Millie, starting conversations, complementing her, and showing her kindness that seems a little bit too personal. He is clearly sick of dealing with all of his wife’s episodes.

When Nina notices the connection between them, things become a lot tougher for Millie at this new job. Nina is much colder towards Millie and snaps at her often, clearly showing her jealousy. Tension is created between all of the characters, especially Millie and Nina. Secrets begin to surface, and Millie feels like taking this job may have put her in real danger.

There are many different themes that are shown throughout this movie. The main one, in my opinion, is that things aren’t always what they seem.

For example, Nina, Andrew, and Cecilia seem like the perfect family to an outsider. However, behind closed doors there is a lot of jealousy, manipulation, and secrecy going on that no one would ever expect. This just shows that appearances can be deceiving and perfection does not really exist.

Overall, I think that “The Housemaid” is a very good and well-thought out movie. The strong storyline and unexpected plot twists are what makes this movie so entertaining. The director builds suspense throughout the movie with the suspicious actions of all of the characters, and then take the story in a completely different direction towards the end.

Although I don’t think Sydney Sweeney is a very good actress, she does an admirable job here as her performance doesn’t stick out as a negative. The acting of all of the characters adds to the intensity and makes the story more believable. But above all, the suspense and plot twists are what I thought really made this movie so memorable. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys movies, with drama, tension, and shocking twists.
