Track and field turns it up at EPCs

On May 7 and 8, Stroudsburg and the rest of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference headed to Whitehall High School to compete in the 2025 EPC Championship Meet. Heading into the event, Stroudsburg was 4-3, both boys and girls.  Ready for a strong meet, sophomore sprinter Keyen Johnson,’27, opened up with a strong second-place finish in the EPC in the 200m, running a 22.38. Johnson has been a top sprinter for the boys and poses a strong argument for the best, being the only sprinter on the team to place this year.  The girls took over this meet, seeing the EPCs’ top sprinter Alena Murray,‘25, run a 12.02 100m to take first place, while in the 200m, Julia Grant, ‘26, also took first. Grant ran a 24.87, PRing to bring that gold medal home. Not only did Grant take home the 200m title, but she also took gold in the 400m. Running a 55.87 in her event, she smoked the competition, becoming one of the most decorated girls’ athletes Stroudsburg has ever seen.

Girl Scout helping a dying bat population with bat boxes

DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Girl Scouts are known for helping the community and selling cookies, but embracing bats? That is exactly what is behind a local Girl Scout's mission in the Poconos. Kendra Collins is not supervising a major construction project, but she hopes what she is teaching girls to build brings major benefits. "It really goes back to loving the unloved, you know, because people don't like bats. They're scary, you know," said Kendra. But those wing-thinged, flying mammals are beneficial to the environment. Bats consume large amounts of insects, including many agricultural pests. They are also considered crucial in pollination and spreading seeds. "There used to be, like, millions upon millions of bats," Kendra explained. But that was before a virus called "white nose syndrome" emerged nearly two decades ago.It decimated the bat population, especially in Pennsylvania.

Two arrested, one wanted on arson charges in the Poconos

BARRETT TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pocono Mountain Regional Police have announced the arrest of two individuals and a third suspect still on the run after a December 2023 arson attempt. Pocono Mountain Regional Police say they were dispatched to the 100 block of Pine Knob Lane in Canadensis after the resident was woken up by a loud bang. Upon inspecting the property she found a Molotov cocktail burning on her front porch, which she kicked off the porch. The press release goes on to say that the resident then found a second Molotov cocktail that had shattered in her driveway but did not detonate. Investigators said they found two additional Molotov cocktails that had also failed to detonate, one by the rear of the house and the other on the side of the house. Both failed to fully ignite, according to police.
